Did you know… Anna Reeves Jarvis inspired the first Mother’s Day in the United States?  In 1908, after she died, her daughter Anna M. Jarvis campaigned for the creation of an official day in remembrance of her mother and in honor of “peace”.  She petitioned the superintendent of her mother’s church and that year, Mother’s Day was celebrated in West Virginia and Philadelphia.  Anna arranged for white carnations – her mother’s favorite flower – to adorn the 407 people who showed up for the event.

To this day, white carnations honors deceased mothers, and red or pink carnations honors mothers who are with us.

Thank you, and happy Mother’s Day!
